Natural, soft resin, obtained after distilling turpentine from the resin of coniferous trees. It occurs in the form of delicate lumps of various colors: from light yellow to dark brown (pine rosin). It is one of the components of varnishes, siccatives and doubling masses, as well as printing paints, lacquer, varnishes and varnishes. It is flammable, and melts just as easily. It does not dissolve in water, but it is highly soluble in acetone, amyl, butyl, ethyl and methyl alcohol, gasoline, carbon tetrachloride, ethyl ether, xylene, toluene and turpentine oil. After dissolving in methyl alcohol, it can be used as a fixative for excessively absorbent mortars, and in combination with wax as a component of an encaustic binder. Rosin is also used in violin making.
