The base for tempera can be any plaster, as long as it is in good condition and does not have a painting on it.
If the plaster is covered with paint or whitened with lime, this should be removed. It is best to prepare a special plaster, such as for fresco.
It can consist of two layers:the first layer of coarse sand and lime;the second layer of thin filler and lime.
Before painting, the plaster is repainted with skimmed milk mixed with lime milk (2 : 1).
Having an old plaster at your disposal, you can paste a canvas on it (with rice flour clay) and paint on this.
