Manila copal is a type of plant resin extracted through incisions on the trunk of the almacig tree (Agathis philippinensis), a species in the araucaria family that grows in the Philippines. This resin comes in various sizes and is light yellow in color. It is readily soluble in ethanol at concentrations of more than 94 percent, allowing it to form transparent varnishes with high filling capacity and impressive gloss. Thanks to its high binding capacity, it can also be used to bond powder pigments. In addition to varnish production, it is used in the manufacture of wood products (such as frames), incense, enamels, adhesives and paints. It provides a durable binder when combined with shellac polish, while improving mechanical properties. It can also be used to produce a wood preservative with decay-preventing properties.
