They are obtained by adding wax to the paints while painting, or covering the painting after it is completed with a matte varnish.
Wax is introduced into the paints by dissolving it in turpentine and adding it to the varnish, which is then used to thin the paints.
Composition of wax varnish:
  • 1 part wax is dissolved in 3 parts turpentine;
  • 1 part of the above solution is mixed with 6 parts of damar or mastic varnish.

Wax

Chemical composition: esters of palmitic acid.
Melting point: 63 ÷ 65°C.
In warmth it softens, in frost it crumbles.
In the cold it dissolves in turpentine, toluene, benzene, kerosene and chloroform.
In oily oils it dissolves when heated, when cooled - it separates.
With alkalis in water it emulsifies.
Chemically not very active, used in painting since ancient times.
Unpurified, it contains residues of honey and pollen of flowers.
It is purified by boiling it several times in water.
It is bleached, like flax, in the sun and air (planed).
The color of the wax is impermanent.
