It is similar to honey watercolor, but is more liquid (contains less water). Gouache has a rather emulsion-like binder and stands on the border of tempera, but whiter than it when dry.
Decorative gouaches are made from cheaper materials and are often based on so-called wheat starch. It is a binder that binds well and is delicate, giving a velvety matte finish when dry.
