Carbolic acid

Pure has the shape of colorless needle-like crystals with a characteristic odor.
It is soluble in water (1 : 15) and in all organic solvents.
It is used rather in adhesive technology.

Naftol

Colorless, transparent flakes, obtained from naphthalene. Weak carbolic odor.
Easily dissolved in spirit, ether, volatile and oily oils.

Sublimate - mercuric chloride

Soluble in water (1 : 15) and spirit (1 : 3).
Strongly poisonous.

Formalin

It is obtained by oxidation of wood spirit.
It is sold as a 30 ÷ 40% aqueous solution.
A strong preservative and oxidizing agent.
Animal glue moistened with a 4% solution of formalin becomes insoluble in water.
Preservative properties are still characterized by the following substances:
  • turpentine,
  • wine spirit,
  • vinegar,
  • clove oil,
  • spice oil,
  • lavender oil,
  • creosote,
  • resorcinol,
  • ammonia,
  • borax,
  • camphor,
  • wood spirit (methyl).
