The word "fresco" in Italian means "fresh."
Colloquially, the term "fresco" is used to refer to wall painting regardless of the technique of execution.
This terminology is not correct, as the word "fresco" means a specific wall technique done on fresh, wet plaster.
Types of fresco:
- "buon fresco",meaning wet, fresh;
- "fresco a secco",meaning dry, on dried plaster;
- "fresco method",that is, a combination of fresco and tempera.
In all cases, the binder for the pigments is lime (more precisely: lime water).
The above terminology has a rather historical meaning, as this is how the lime technique was formerly called.
